Review count is the most visible trust signal in local search, review velocity is a ranking input, and review text feeds your keyword relevance. Three reasons one asset matters this much — and yet most businesses' review strategy is "hope".
Here's every tactic that works, ranked by return on effort. Start at the top.
1. The same-day SMS/WhatsApp ask (highest ROI, by far)
Send a short message within hours of the visit with a direct review link: "Thanks for coming in today! If you have 30 seconds, a Google review would mean a lot: [link]". Conversion on a same-day ask with a direct link runs 15–25%. The identical message sent three days later converts at less than half that. Recency is the whole game.
2. The counter QR code
A QR code at the payment point catches customers at the exact moment of transaction closure — wallet out, phone in hand, experience complete. Print it on the bill, a table tent, or the back of the visiting card. (GrowMe Locally generates a print-ready branded QR poster for every connected listing.)
3. Train the verbal ask — with a script
"Leave us a review sometime!" converts at roughly zero. "I'm going to send you a link right now — it's literally two taps" converts because it removes the searching. The script matters more than the asking: staff need exact words, not an instruction to "encourage reviews".
4. Reply to every review you already have
Counterintuitive but measurable: profiles that visibly reply get more unsolicited reviews. Customers write more when they can see the owner reads. It's the review-section equivalent of a lit shopfront.
5. Time the ask to the emotional peak
Every business has a moment of maximum customer happiness: gym = after a PR; salon = the mirror reveal; mover = boxes in the new home; tutor = results day. Map yours and put the ask there, not at invoicing.
6. The monthly batch-ask to your customer list
A short email/WhatsApp broadcast to recent customers ("It helps more than you'd think") yields a reliable trickle. Keep it to customers from the last 60 days — older memories write vaguer reviews, and vague reviews carry less ranking value.
7. Make the review link unavoidable in your digital surface
Email signature, website footer, Instagram bio, invoice PDF. Each placement converts a fraction of a percent — together they compound into your baseline drip.
8. Recover detractors before they post
An unprompted complaint channel ("Problem? WhatsApp the owner directly: …") intercepts a portion of would-be 1-stars. You can't (and shouldn't) gate reviews — but you can make complaining to you easier than complaining to Google.
9. What not to do
Don't buy reviews (detection has gotten genuinely good, and the penalty is listing suspension — read our suspension recovery guide for how bad that gets). Don't run "review us for a discount" promotions — incentivized reviews violate policy. Don't review-gate with filtering software. Every shortcut here is a loan against your listing's life.
The compounding math
Tactics 1+2+4 alone, run consistently, produce 5–15 reviews a month for a typical service business. Within two quarters that's the difference between "38 reviews (2019)" and "140 reviews, newest yesterday" — and in the Local Pack, that difference is usually the ranking.
